+SPECIAL GUEST EMPLOYEES include former Laurie's employees Sam O'Rama & Tim!
+More to be announced!

EVENT SCHEDULE (as it stands now-- all times will be finalized in the next week-- please follow up here!-- more will be added very soon!)

9:00am-12:00pm: General chaos

We are kicking off the day with Melissa's BLVD RECORDS mini-showcase, featuring Chicago's powerhouse heavyweights FAKE LIMBS and Chicago's most excellent shoegazing, ambient dreampoppers SAVAGE SISTER. Both ends of the spectrum to open up the live band portion of our day, which lives up to the BLVD Records release ethic: "putting out everything that is great."

2:00 TBA

One of Chicago's finest young bands, we're stoked to have the LEMONS rock the RSD stage with their super-60s jangly starry garage/pop sound. Named one of "15 Chicago Artists to Watch in 2014" in the Redeye!

4:00 PHIL ANGOTTI & FRIENDS' "Sounds of Silence"
The incredible Phil Angotti (The Fleas, The Scuttle, Beatle Brothers, The Idea), longtime fixture in the power-pop world and all-around excellent local musician, will be executing Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" album (plus one bonus track!), with several friends TBA. You may remember Phil from being part of our RSD past performances, such as Edward Burch's "Elvis, Angotti, Dawson & Burch Ltd."

Our very good friends THE HANDCUFFS finally bring their amazing garagey/glam/r'n'r stylings to Laurie's! Led by the lovely Chloe Orwell and local drummer-extraordinaire Brad Elvis-- you might know Brad Elvis as the drummer for The Romantics, and formerly for the Elvis Brothers & Screams, among others! He's ALSO been a past Laurie's RSD performer and we're so very excited to have his band here!

CHICAGO'S ORIGINAL NO-WAVER/PUNX SILVER ABUSE will bring their awesomely damaged, experimental skronk to Record Store Day! Potentially Chicago's very first "punk" band, featured in the legendary "You Weren't There" documentary, and featured on the legendary "Busted At Oz" live compilation (a hard-to-find gem of Chicago's early punk era)! We're honored to have 'em here!

7:00 MAZES
Another one of our favorite newer local bands, MAZES
play dreamy, psychedelic pop music that's perfect for appreciators of Flying Nun and the like. Two members from the 1900s!

10:00pm- We close and all of us Laurie’s staff pass out.

As always, we will be posting our full list of everything we will have on stock the day before RSD, which is Friday, April 18!

From Paul...
Future Islands “Singles”
Baltimore indie dance-pop trio Future Islands' new LP is by far the most accessible to date. Loaded with hooks and sing-along parts, fans of their more experimental Thrill Jockey releases "In Evening Air" and "On The Water" may feel left behind, but the honesty, the emotion and the exceptional songwriting that makes Future Islands special is still there.

"Singles" starts with "Seasons (Waiting On You)" which they performed on The Late Show With David Letterman to much internet meme-ism (definitely youtube it). From there, well-crafted bass and synthesizers flesh out the drum machine and create the canvas for the thoughtful, heartfelt emotional lyrics of Samuel T Herring's unique voice.

This is a no-lulls, summer jams album!

Here’s a very cool photo piece on our little store done by our friend Richard Giraldi, who also runs the very cool local music site, Loud Loop Press!
Check it out here: Laurie’s Planet of Sound on EXPOSURE

We’ll have all our activities and band lineup up in the next few days!!!!! That’s all for now <3 Check our Facebook page daily for more news. Meanwhile, we have put out HUNDREDS of very cool, high-quality used LPs throughout the past week, so come on by and check out our racks!

From Melissa....
Savage Sister “Wild Sleep” EP cassette (Wild Patterns)
Extraordinarily beautiful shoegazey ambience from our own fair city, Savage Sister are a young band who travel up, over and beyond typical ‘shoegaze/dreampop revivalism’ -- def pick this up if you’re a serious gazehead or even the most casual MBV/Cocteaus listener. Savage Sister are most definitely A BAND TO WATCH! And hey, we, "we" being BLVD Records, will be working with Savage Sister to put out their next full-length on vinyl!

From traxxhound.com:  “The title of the album, Wild Sleep, could not be more appropriate when one considers the sonic temperament of the album, which ranges from moments of tranquility, to bouts of dark and evocative darkwave. A staple, however, is the startlingly beautiful vocal work by Lundgren, the almost palpable sense of reverb, and a dense atmosphere, all culminating to form a completely alluring sound. Multi-instrumentalist, Tenzer, has clearly spent many gruelling hours perfecting each and every detail, and it has certainly paid off – it’s another masterpiece!”

Froe Char “Fossils” LP (Modern Tapes/Spielzeug Muzak)
Haunting/droning minimal wave/synth... very dark but very beautiful, layered with complex textures and very delicately songwritten. HIGHLY recommended!
From the label... “Froe Char aka Italian/Parisian Christina Lauro is also known as 1/2 of the duo Illustration Sonore who has an amazing Lp being released by the fantastic Medical Records label. There have been a pair of previous Froe Char releases of dark beautiful ambiance but with “Fossils” she takes the distorted haze and murk of her prior work and uses it as a texture amid percolating synths and minimalist rhythms. “Fossils” is the sultry minimal synth record for the experimental crowd or the noisy bleak record for the coldwave kids. I once heard someone say “you can’t dance to pain” but this record really proves otherwise."

From Lauren AND Melissa...
Unur “No Human Self” cassette (Modern Tapes)
Lauren says:
Unur “No Human Self” is dark, brooding synth-driven music with cool, unique guitar progressions, vintage drum machines and alternating male/occasional femal vocals. Some of the tracks have sick hooks, the rest have driving, drone rhythms that lock you into a space groove. Space as in outer space. Overall, the album has a bit of an 80s sci-fi soundtrack-feel but simultaneously is post-punky. For fans of Wire “154” + 80s Tangerine Dream.

Melissa says:
Another local release from our friend Unur, and this new full-length is KILLER in all it’s minimal/synth/posptunk beauty. DIY/punk-rooted synthwave.
“This is the first proper full length to come from this nomadic one person band.  13 new songs of further evolved post-wave noir, created from an eclectic mix of vintage and modern analogue synthesizers washed with a haze of ever increasing guitar buzz. This is the next step.”

Yeah, we have plans. Lotsa plans-- we’ll have some of our traditional events and some different things going on. We’re not telling you anything yet... except for the following:

We will be having a RSD preparty at the Charleston in Chicago on Thursday, April 17 with The Ladies of Laurie’s DJing.
We will be open 9am-10pm on Saturday, April 19th.
Clear your calender from noon to 8pm because all bands playing are rad.

And as usual, we have NO IDEA WHAT RECORD STORE DAY TITLES WE’LL ACTUALLY BE GETTING IN UNTIL (LITERALLY) THE DAY BEFORE RSD!! And we mean that in the nicest way possible. And we still won’t hold RSD titles. Just be patient while we toil away like madpeople trying to do everything we can for y’all to have a great day. More updates coming soon!

Aside from the announcement that they'll be releasing an album this year for Chicago's Savage Sister, Melissa's BLVD Records is working with Danish postpunk/shoegaze band The Foreign Resort. They are in town THIS WEDNESDAY (3/19) all the way from Copenhagen, playing a free show at The Emporium Bar & Arcade with BLVD family members Population. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING TO THIS!

In the next couple days, we will be integrating all of our vinyl. That’s right, all used and new vinyl will be housed together in the racks for your (and our) ease! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS! And if you need help locating that darn constantly-traveling “Soundtracks” section, just ask us! We’re also keeping a monthly new release log at the counter, so if you’re wondering what all the hot new releases are, just give it a look-through!

We are slowly re-stocking our Jensen turntables with new and better models after our holiday-time turntable wipeout! We’ll have more in at the end of the month, but we just got a load of these new models, The Jensen Suitcase Turntable, that are really great portable/self-contained players:

The new JENSEN Suitcase Turntable is sleek black, looking like a relic from the 1960's with a sturdy carrying handle and rubber foot rests, this is the first of their redesigned line of turntables. Using quality parts and construction that were lacking on previous models- after giving this one a trial use we are looking forward to carrying the rest of the redesigns! It also comes equipped with satisfying player options. The 3-speed record player hits all the preset speeds accurately (33 1/3, 45 and 78RPM). The platter is stable and the tone arm has a lift-lever that allows for smooth needle descent. The internal speakers pack a decent punch, though there is some distortion when you turn an LP all the way up to maximum volume. The distortion was not apparent when we maxed out an iPod using the 1/8" aux connector cord in the back, however! Using the RCA output on the back allows you to upgrade the sound quality or adjust the speaker output and equalization.
And like many similar turntables, this one also allows you to digitize any format via USB input (comes with installation software on a 3" CD). It is certainly an entry-level machine. More "record player" than "turntable", and for the cost of a decent needle and cartridge you are getting what you pay for, make no mistake. At $89.99, it is a bargain, and feels more refined than contemporary competitors versions of suitcase record players. Perfect for a studio, dorm, bedroom or wherever you want to carry it!

This suitcase model is $89.99. We’ll have more great new models in at the end of the month, so keep an eye out!

The Laurie's Staff Presents: Our Best of 2013 Lists!

John Laurie: Five DVD's I was glad to be able to own in 2013.
This 1981 comedy-horror-musical film stars Vincent Price, John Carradine, and Donald Pleasence and is one of those obscure gems long sought out by fans of Vincent Price. An anthology of horror vignettes, very much in the vein of previous Amicus films like Tales from the Crypt (1972) and Vault of Horror (1973), this turned out to be the final film for Amicus, and it was nice seeing them mixing up the formula a bit, even if it was too little, too late. This film is much more knowingly camp than their previous anthologies, and the in-between stories bits are actually musical interludes (one features The Damned in all their goth-glory!) which may have been an attempt at becoming a midnight cult film ala' Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sadly, Monster Club wound up never getting a release here in the states, and what little exposure it has received has been shoddy at best. The first DVD release in 2004 from Pathfinder Video was mastered from a murky print of the film and had a muddy mono soundtrack to match. This  release from Scorpion Films is a fantastic upgrade and contains 16×9 anamorphic HD mastered pristine video and audio and quite a few extras including interviews lifted from the Vincent Price - Sinister Image DVD.

Though available for many years on various budget labels (usually titled My Son, The Vampire), VCI's 2013 version is miles better than any previously released. It doesn't improve the actual film, but at least if you hate the film it won't be because it was blurry, spotted, scratched, incomplete, or all four. Having the option to subtitle went a long way in helping this yank enjoy the British accents that for many years flummoxed me. The plot features a robust and energetic Bela Lugosi as a "vampire" scientist building an army of robots to take over the world. British drag comedian Arthur Lucan plays the titular Old Mother Riley, who's zany antics threaten to foil Bela's sure-fire plan. If you're a fan of Bela Lugosi, or British comedic films of the period, I think there are far worse ways to spend 70 minutes.

As long as Shout Factory are releasing MST3K sets, I will no doubt be including at least one on my yearly "Best of" lists. This particular one is something very special. You get 4 unreleased episodes, 2 Joel (Moon Zero Two & The Day The Earth Froze) and 2 Mike (The Leech Woman & Gorgo), plus a bonus disc double feature of the classic episodes which link the hosts: Mitchell and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (both previously released, but now out of print) AND documentaries galore! It's an abundance of riches, all in a shiny tin box.

THE HOWLING (DVD and Blu-ray)
The classic 1981 horror film written by John Sayles and Terence H. Winkless, and Directed by Joe Dante (Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, Gremlins) is finally re-released and loaded on both DVD and Blu Ray with commentaries, interviews, featurettes, and deleted scenes. Special effects in films were moving in leaps and bounds in 1981, and this film was state of the art, featuring human into werewolf transformations that are hands down superior to anything being done today with CGI. When skin stretches and skeletons expand, it's a visceral experience that can't be recreated digitally. Sadly, CGI is cheap, if not effective, making the early 80's the true golden age of effects make-up. And though every sequel tried to equal the sexy werewolves on display here, there is nothing like the original. I always wondered why lead villainess Elisabeth Brooks never attained more than cult status, only to find out during the commentary that she really wanted to peruse singing and teaching, so acting was not her passion. She was also the long time lover of Kristy McNichol, and was ahead of her time being an out lesbian in Hollywood. She died of brain cancer in 1997.

LIFEFORCE (DVD and Blu-ray)
Directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), 1985′s LIFEFORCE (DVD and Blu-ray) stars Steve Railsback, Mathilda May, and Patrick Stewart. Based on Colin Wilson‘s 1976 novel, The Space Vampires, Lifeforce is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Scream Factory and features both the film’s original theatrical version and the longer international one. The vampires from outer space / zombie apocalypse plot is ridiculously convoluted, and even at the longer length it still seems like a Cliffs notes version, but the movie zips along at a breathless pace, and the new color corrected transfer is almost as stunning as actress Mathilda May, who goes through the entirety of the film in the buff. I found the commentary by Tobe Hooper somewhat interesting, but I can see it making most folks drowsy. These guys save you the trouble of listening yourself. http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/22-things-we-learned-from-the-lifeforce-commentary.php

I guess picking 20 year old material for the album of 2013 would be weird, but I honestly don't think anything else released this year was THIS GOOD. This was SUCH a good band and this is a perfect collection with a good number of their hits and two fantastic covers of Badfinger and The Move.
