"We Wanted To See What Happened If We Did Everything Wrong" - The Disturbing Records Story

Disturbing Records is a punk and new wave record label based in Bridgeport and was founded by Mike Pocius in the 1970s.

In the late 70s, punk was hitting the North side of Chicago in Lincoln Park clubs like OZ and Tuts and bands like The Effigies, Tutu And The Pirates and Da! were creating the scene that still continues to this day. But, down on the south side, things were a little more...DISTURBING!

While The C*nts may not be the best-known punk band, they were perhaps the first Chicago band to treat performing music as an art project. In doing so, they set the bar for punk bands for decades. Recently, their singer Mike Pocius stopped by and dropped off a handful of the remaining CD anthologies he made to document his relatively-unknown-but-legendary band.

"When we started off, we wanted to be a band that did everything wrong. We didn't care if it sounded good, we wanted it to sound wrong!" he told me. "Even the name! When we took the record to the pressing plant (where they pressed mainly polka records) the guy there wouldn't let us use our name, that's where the asterisk came from!"

After making a few records as The C*nts, Mike started Disturbing Records. "You used to be able to press 1000 records for $250!" and they did! Soon, Disturbing Records became the place for up-and-coming Chicago bands like Painterband, Meaty Buys and Blue Room in the late 70s/80s. While these may not be household names, their ethos of doing whatever they wanted characterized the bands, the label and the scene down in Bridgeport.

The C*nts have disbanded, their records are in the hands of collectors or Bridgeport basements, and Disturbing Records hasn't made any vinyl in a while. But, their idea that music should push boundaries even in ways that weren't going to guarantee sales or make them rich and famous lives on! Chicago's DIY scene today reflects these ethics. Noise, Drone, Punk, Metal and Experimental genres thrive in underground venues in 2016. Crowds looking for new sounds guarantee that musicians will continue to destroy boundaries and refuse to act like all the other bands doing the same old thing.

These days, Mike works with the mentally challenged teaching them art and running art shows for the work they create! Check out his art show on October 21st from 6-10pm @ Project Onward in the Bridgeport Arts Center or visit www.projectonward.org for more information.

And come by Laurie's Planet Of Sound and pick up your $5 copy of the anthology "Apocalyptic Garage Rock" and give this band the attention they've always deserved!
